Web hosting is, generally speaking, a critical element to your online endeavors. It allows us to get our website out and to the masses with little to no fuss, it can keep our emails churning, and it can even better the quality of our lives. However, up until now you may have been unaware of just how much money you can personally make from the world of web hosting. In fact, if you’ve never been told, one can make a fortune without hardly dipping a toe into the market.
You can host your web site or photo gallery with Linode, but unlike other traditional hosting companies that offer shared hosting solutions, Linode offers Virtual Private Server hosting (VPS) where you spin up a virtual server with the memory, disk space, and file transfer that you need for whatever application you’re building or web site you’re hosting. Some users even use their Linode servers as remote desktop replacements, others use it as private, cloud-based application servers, and others use them to host their webapps, developed applications, and blogs. You get full SSH and root access on your servers, guaranteed resources, and your choice of linux distro on the servers you purchase. Prices vary depending on the type of server you’re looking for and the resources you want it to have, but start at $19.95/mo. You can check out all Linode’s offerings here.
We required all of our web hosts to offer at least three types of hosting: shared, dedicated, and VPS or cloud hosting. Shared is most likely your first step if you’re just starting to build your website. Dedicated and cloud hosting are upper service tiers that can help your website flourish as it grows, and an upgrade option will save you the future trouble of migrating to another company as you expand.
The next level up is the Plus plan. This starts at $6.95/month and comes with the ability to set up ten websites. You have 150GB of disk space with this plan. Again, you get unmetered bandwidth and one primary domain. You can park 20 domains with this plan, and host up to 50 sub-domains. Email functionality is greatly increased. You now have access to 100 accounts with 500MB of storage per account. This plan also includes "marketing offers" worth about $150 and spam prevention.
For packages supporting unmetered disk space or data transfer (bandwidth), we do not have defined limitations. These resources are "unmetered", meaning you are not billed according to the amount of disk space or bandwidth used. While of course these resources are not infinite, we believe our customers should have all the resources necessary to build an online presence and 99.95% of customers will have more than enough disk space and bandwidth to meet their needs.

Shared hosting is the most basic form of web hosting, and is best for websites with low to moderate traffic — small businesses and new websites will benefit from the low cost and relative simplicity of using a common server. Your website will be located on the same server as other sites, and will share the common resources of that one server (which usually means sharing an IP address, too). Your site will be allocated a certain amount of the collective bandwidth, and it may be impacted by other sites on that same server since the server’s abilities will be affected if any one of its websites — yours or someone else’s — experiences unusually high traffic. If someone else’s site has excessive usage, your site may slow. If your site has a spike, it may be shut off by your host and you might be charged for exceeding your allotted bandwidth.

On the internet, there seems to be no location. You can visit a site out of Beijing as easily as you can from Topeka. But just because you can go everywhere in the world on the internet doesn't mean that the internet isn't localized. If you want your website visitors to be served as quickly as possible, your best bet is to host your site on a web server as close to your users as possible.

With a shared hosting plan, you are renting space on a server that you share with other website owners. This also means you're sharing resources like bandwidth, memory, and processing power. This can be a problem, because a web host company typically supports hundreds, even thousands, of websites on a single server. Most of these websites will get very little traffic, allowing those who do see higher levels of traffic to use the resources they need. Nevertheless, there are no guarantees that you will get the resources necessary to support your website.

People often think that a web host is the main cause of a slow website but, this is often not the case. When picking a provider, it's important for find a hosting provider that is close to your users and has a good amount of RAM and fast CPU power. Beyond that, it's often the way the website is set up that slows it down for users. To ensure that your website speed is optimal for users you need to make sure you pay attention to the following:
A dedicated IP address (the number that locates your website within a network) isn’t necessary for domain owners who are just starting out, but it’s worth considering. There’s nothing inherently wrong with sharing an IP address but it can lead to consequences beyond your control. For example, if one of the websites on your shared server sends spam emails or engages in other illicit behavior, that website’s IP address may be blocked from other sites or services. The firewall used to block the IP won’t be able to distinguish between the offending site and yours and you’ll be blacklisted (at least temporarily) from sending emails, too.
Web hosting is a very legitimate need for most individuals and businesses. Unfortunately it is also an urgent need for hackers and spammers of many kinds. These people will always try to sign up for cheap hosting accounts, especially if there is an x months for free promo. Worse: they will also sign up for more expensive hosting accounts using stolen credit card info!
We’re serious about high security. The latest hardware and software firewalls protect our infrastructure. We diligently tweak and secure the Operating Systems running on our servers. And we constantly scan, probe and test our defense systems to ensure that we’re one of the most secure hosts around. The Namecheap commitment to security means your websites are safer here.
Shared hosting, also sometimes referred to as virtual hosting, is a web hosting environment where each individual hosting account is stored on a single web server. Think of a web server as a very powerful computer loaded with resources. Each of the accounts on the server share the same system resources whether it is disk space, data transfer or server processing power.
Enterprise websites include very popular marketing and media sites, as well as social, travel, and other application-heavy websites. For example, Lamborghini, Coursera, and Nordstrom use AWS to host their websites. Enterprise websites need to dynamically scale resources and be highly available to support the most demanding and highly trafficked websites.
Unlike many of the more flexible web hosting sites, iPage only offers one simple sign-up option called the Essential plan. Most of the features are unlimited, so this plan is pretty much all you need anyway. You can create your website using Wordpress, or you can use iPage's proprietary builder that has drag and drop functionality as well as templates that are pretty mobile-friendly.
For example, only organizations can register a “.org” domain name, and only American citizens can register a domain name that ends in “.us.” Failing to meet the guidelines and requirements for each type of domain during the actual registration and payment process will result in the domain name being “released” back into the pool of available domain names; the customer will have to pick a top level domain for which they actually qualify, or cancel their purchase altogether.
On a shared server, your site is vulnerable to the company it keeps. A bad 'neighborhood' may result in your shared IP being blacklisted, and that could result in your sent emails being filed into spam folders. You can guard against this by using a VPS or dedicated server, or using a third party email service that is separate to your hosting service.
Sadly, there is a bit of a "gotcha" to the free automatic backup service. If you're paying $3.95 a month (for the first year of hosting, then $9.95 a month), you don't get restores for free. Each restore, no matter how small or large, will cost you $19.95. I'm not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand, the company has to pay salaries to tech support reps who can handle panicking customers. On the other hand, it seems kind of mean-spirited to hit someone when they're down with an added fee. That said, getting your data back – at any price – is priceless.
